Supernatural - Robben Ford

I first saw Robben Ford in the early 70’s as a very young lead guitarist for Tom Scott’s LA Express. They were the backup band for Joni Mitchell’s Court & Spark tour. Robben not only had the chops, but a cool confidence as a player that defied his age. Now, years later, he has a stellar resume and a whole catalogue of worthy albums. One of those great ones is 1999’s Supernatural.

I believe Mr. Ford likes to think of himself as a blues guy. He plays the blues for sure, but he sings like someone who has never gone without cappuccino and a Beautyrest. Are you supposed to be able to understand EVERY word of a blues song? I don’t know…..but this album is awfully good. His guitar playing is magnificently minimal -- don’t expect him to smoke the fret board, though (I promise you) he could have. (NOTE: If you’ve seen him live lately, it’s very clear why Fender has a line of guitars named after this guy!) Supernatural is all very deliberate -- 11 distinctive and interesting songs, including two lush beauties (Don’t Lose Your Faith in Me and If) that are just outstanding. The cool Water for the Wicked and You Got Me Knockin’ will literally stay on your mind long after the CD player has been turned off. It’s one good tune after another. Ford is his own man and he plays what he likes. He obviously likes tasty music.

For another excellent and highly recommended Robben Ford album, try Talk to your Daughter.    GD
