Greatest Hits - Simply Red
It’s supposedly not proper to review a greatest hits collection although at our age that’s usually what we’ve been buying as we have made the transition from vinyl into the techno world. I’m going to review this simply because it is so good. This collection combines the cream from Picture Book, Men and Women, A New Flame, Stars and Life, which all solidly stand on their own. Mick Hucknall and all of the collaborative musicians and singers that created this group of work are as talented as they are seemingly underappreciated. Solid work can be found between the political Money’s Too Tight To Mention and the delightfully silly (and one of my favorites) So Beautiful. Listen to all of the songs that are available but when you’ve got a special someone you want to get closer to, light a fire, burn a candle, pour a nice Cabernet and put on Stars – you just might get the desired effect. It is ironic that one of the few songs Mick didn’t write probably sums up his place in the musical ladder – If You Don’t Know Me By Now. If you don’t know this red haired soul master by now, give this greatest hits compilation a shot. AW
