Something / Anything? - Todd Rundgren

Speaking of NAZZ, I’ve been a Todd Rundgren fan from way back to his teenage years with his first band. I thought he was good then and I think he’s good now. In between there was some brilliant songwriting (Runt / The Ballad of Todd Rundgren), some obvious mistakes (Hermit of Mink Hollow), some interesting experiments (Utopia) and many variables in between. However, to me Todd’s signature was Something / Anything? This 1972 double album has it all including songs I still sing out loud (in the privacy of my car, thank you). The interesting aspect of this double album is that on sides 1, 2 and 3 all of the voices are Todd’s and he plays ALL of the instruments – quite a feat for then or now. One of his few commercial successes, I Saw The Light, resides here and a live version of another Hello It’s Me, is on side 4 as an afterthought. The guitar work and uplifting message of Sweeter Memories is worth a listen in itself. There are a couple of fun tunes, Wolfman Jack, Piss Aaron and I Went To The Mirror as well as an ode to what could have been – It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference. A very good rock effort, Black Maria, is even mo’ better when you realize that it is a one man show. The seamy Hollywood in the Runt comes out in You Left Me Sore and Slut (go figure), but I think one of the most thought provoking songs on the album is Some Folks Is Even Whiter Than Me. Go ahead and get Something / Anything? out of your storage boxes and listen to it again and…. oh yeah….turn it up and sing along.  AW
