It's Like You Never Left - Dave Mason
I guess America first heard of British rocker Dave Mason when TRAFFIC burst on the scene in the late 60s. As guitarist for this unique foursome (along with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi & Chris Wood), he contributed the catchy and frequently-covered Feelin’ Alright. But for whatever reason (presumably artistic differences with boy genius Winwood), Dave bolted from the band and immediately became a valuable session player for some of rock’s greatest legends – he plays the classic opening chords on All Along the Watchtower, my favorite Hendrix tune. And, along the way, he recorded many quality solo albums. It’s Like You Never Left is one of the best.
Despite it’s pop sensibility (think McCartney or Badfinger), this album still earns the hippie seal of approval. Dave was a cool dude and these standout songs are totally appealing to serious rock fans. It’s Like You Never Left features guest artists George Harrison and Stevie Wonder. Without a doubt, the album’s highlight is Lonely One, featuring not the voice, but the harmonica of Motown’s foremost practitioner. It makes you wish these two would have recorded a whole album together. The title track is also outstanding, along with Misty Morning Stranger and Headkeeper. All ten songs rock --and it’s a worthwhile investment of your time to check this one out. GD
