Motown - Michael McDonald

It was the bearded one's crooning of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on the cell phone commercial that made me order this one. It's simply fourteen covers of mostly familiar Motown classics. All good and adequate and memory-evoking, but probably not really necessary. As one of rock's most recognizable and pleasing voices, old Mike could do this forever - pick any genre, select a dozen good tunes, assemble the usual suspects in the studio, and hit the record button. No knock to the blue-eyed soul man, but it's not possible to upstage Marvin and Stevie and those guys with the original cuts. If he's just retooling some wonderful old songs in a respectful way (and I think he is), then it's clearly a worthy effort. I really like these songs and I really like McDonald. Motown is hardly a crime, but don't expect to be exhilarated. Just sing along.
NOTE: If you want to enjoy a truly excellent McDonald moment, pick up (or dust off) Takin' It to the Streets - Doobie Brothers 1977. It never gets old. GD
